There were a regiment of Huguenot horse, of eight companies, commanded by the Duke of Schomberg, and three regiments of Huguenot foot, commanded by La Mellonière, Du Cambon, and La Caillemotte. Schomberg, the old Huguenot chief, was put in command of the entire force. Rapin accompanied the expedition as a cadet. The army assembled at Highlake, about sixteen miles from Chester.
Indeed, the latter live exactly as well as the officers; they mess with them, have as good berths, & are as familiar with them as they are with each other; very different in every respect from the discipline in English Men of War. Homing seamen who desired to evade the press in that city and they were many fled ashore from their ships at Highlake, a spot so well adapted to their purpose that it required "strict care to catch them."
