Important changes in the Academical system have been recently announced, and honors are henceforth to be accorded to the successful disciples in moral and natural sciences. By the side of the old throne of Mathesis they have placed two very useful fauteuils a la Voltaire.

"Lights in the drawing-rooms, it is growing dark." Lord L'Estrange followed the usurer upstairs; admired everything, pictures, draperies, Sevres china, to the very shape of the downy fauteuils, to the very pattern of the Tournay carpets.

A little infantryman, who occupied one of the fauteuils, his head bent forward, was apparently holding his sides to keep them from splitting. Three others were seated in a negligent pose, their elbows resting on the arms of their chairs, while a chasseur had his hand extended as if in the act of taking a glass from the table.

It would have been rather difficult not to have seen it, as it was the only one in the station, and was marked "Extra and Imperial." There were several large salon carriages with large, comfortable fauteuils, and some tables covered with newspapers and journaux illustres to beguile the time. I should say there were about fifty or sixty guests. We actually flew over land and dale.

The curtains are of crimson satin, with embossed borders of gold-colour; and the sofas, bergères, fauteuils, and chairs, richly carved and gilt, are covered with satin to correspond with the curtains. Gilt consoles, and chiffonnières, with white marble tops, are placed wherever they could be disposed; and, on the chimney pieces, are fine pendules.

The "fauteuils d'orchestre," or orchestra-chairs, are the front row of benches, nearest the stage. The "parterre" is the back rows. There is a little bird's nest of a gallery at the rear of the room, where the spectators cannot stand up without striking the ceiling with their heads.

There was what was called in the language of a Paris editor, a swell house. In front of the stage there was literally a shower of diamonds and the boxes were gaily adorned. The fauteuils were occupied by Parisian glories and foreign celebrities. Not a stall in the amphitheatre without its celebrity.

In fact, there seemed no end to the giving. Small wonder that marriages are on the decline in France! We left the bridal party still on their crimson velvet fauteuils twelve being the number allotted to a wedding of the third class, the remaining guests being accommodated on rush-bottomed chairs and next visited the underground Church of St. Germain.
