In the mind of every man who has passed much of his life in successful action, there is a certain, if we may so say, untaught mathesis, but especially among those who have been bred to the art of war.
Important changes in the Academical system have been recently announced, and honors are henceforth to be accorded to the successful disciples in moral and natural sciences. By the side of the old throne of Mathesis they have placed two very useful fauteuils a la Voltaire.

This anecdote, however excellent, immediately finds a parallel in Pope: "Mad Mathesis alone was unconfined, Too mad for mere material chains to bind; Now to pure space lifts her ecstatic stare, Now running round the circle finds it square."
Commencing with those which may be soonest disposed of, let us notice first the arrangement propounded by Oken. An abstract of it runs thus: Part I. MATHESIS. Pneumatogeny: Primary Art, Primary Consciousness, God, Primary Rest, Time, Polarity, Motion, Man, Space, Point. Line, Surface, Globe, Rotation. Hylogeny: Gravity, Matter, Ether, Heavenly Bodies, Light, Heat, Fire.
Dub., and, mad Mathesis inspiring, might teach eternally how the line AB is equal to the line CD, or why poor X Y Z are unknown quantities. Ah! my dear boy, think of the pleasure, the glory of lecturing classes of ignoramuses, and dunces yet unborn!"

Pope was led into the blunder of representing Mad Mathesis running round the circle, and finding it square by a confused notion that mathematicians had considered the circle as composed of straight lines.
The sublime discoveries of Newton, and, together with these, his not less fruitful than wonderful application, of the higher mathesis to the movements of the celestial bodies, and to the laws of light, gave almost a religious sanction to the corpuscular system and mechanical theory. It became synonymous with philosophy itself. It was the sole portal at which truth was permitted to enter.
