It retained that denomination about four centuries afterwards; but at last it took the name of the saint, in whose honour the parochial church had been built. The present church was consecrated on the 27th january 1538. Neither its interior or exterior offer any thing worthy of notice. This was the chapel of the ancient Carmes déchaussés.

In this reign more religious establishments were founded than in any preceding, amongst which were the Convent of the Carmes Déchaussés, No. 70, Rue de Vaugirard, the monks of which possessed a secret for making a particular kind of liquid which is called Eau des Carmes, and is still in demand; the church and building belonging to the establishment are now standing, and were recently occupied by nuns.

'My little Riou, I said, 'do you know that you are a little imbecile with your piety? There is a time for everything. 'Except religion, M. le Maire; that is never out of place, said Gallais. I could not believe my senses. 'Is it a conversion? I said. 'Some of our Carmes déchaussés must have passed this way.

'M. le Maire will soon see other teachers more wonderful than the Carmes déchaussés, said Lecamus. He went and took down the lantern from its nail, and opened the little door. When it opened, I was once more penetrated by the same icy breath; once, twice, thrice, I cannot tell how many times this crossed me, as if some one passed. I looked round upon the others I gave way a step.

He flew, then, rather than walked, toward the convent of the Carmes Dechausses, or rather Deschaux, as it was called at that period, a sort of building without a window, surrounded by barren fields an accessory to the Preaux-Clercs, and which was generally employed as the place for the duels of men who had no time to lose.
