A state of transition from a country village to a country town of some importance is never pleasant for the old residents for a time. But progress is to be desired for all that, and Gershom is now an incorporated town with a mayor and council-men of its own, and on the whole it may be considered that its prosperity is established on a good foundation.
Council-men 1st Ward Jabez W. Fitch, George Whitelaw. 2d Ward Alexander McIntosh, Thomas C. Floyd. 3d Ward Stoughton Bliss, Miller M. Spangler. 4th Ward Marshall S. Castle, James B. Wilbur. Mayor Abner C. Brownell. President of the Council Leander M, Hubby. Aldermen John B. Wigman, Leander M. Hubby, Basil L. Spangler, Buckley Stedman.
By a concerted assault the city hall was taken possession of by main force, the magistracy was overpowered, and a new board of senators and common council-men appointed, Kanter and a devoted friend of his, Heldingen by name, being elected burgomasters.
The council-men, who usually walked a little in advance of the train, were the first to meet the bear, and he was probably deceived by the sight of this advance body, and thus audaciously defied them.
Among these council-men all retired chiefs and warriors whose ardent zeal for the display of courage had long been cooled, and whose present duties were those of calm deliberation for their people's welfare there were two old, distinguished war-chiefs. Each of these men still carried his war-lance, wrapped up in decorated buckskin.
They looked with astonishment upon the Black Robe. "Dispatch him! Dispatch him! Show him no mercy!" cried some of the council-men. "Let him go on his way unharmed. Trouble him not," advised others. "It is well known that the evil spirits sometimes take the form of a man or animal. From his strange appearance I judge this to be such a one.
