The artificial epic in ottava rima, imitated from the Italian, gave way to a flood of pseudo-historical romances which followed the lead of Sir Walter Scott and the elder Dumas. They were mostly weak imitations, carelessly done and without depth or brilliancy.
Any opposing irregularities in language or action may be explained by the period represented, for the time is that of the early years of the reign of the young monarch, Philip IV, a brilliant though corrupt epoch of Spanish history well worthy of a moment's notice.
Although modern realism triumphed in Spain only with the coming of Fernán Caballero's La gaviota in 1848, the ground was prepared in advance by several writers, the more important of whom are Larra, Estébanez de Calderón and Mesonero Romanos.
It too is one of the few plays of the poet which have continued down to recent times in the favor of the Spanish theater-going public, perhaps in the end the most trustworthy critic.
Since Lope de Vega had no classic rules to observe and was limited in his composition only by popular tastes, he could without offense take his characters from whatever class of society he wished so long as his choice was pleasing to the audience, which, it happens, was not easily offended.
The immortal Cervantes wrote many plays in this period and claimed to favor the classic drama, but his dramatic works are not of sufficient importance to win for him a place in either party.
He knew of the elegant conceits of linguistic expression and used them sparingly in his plays, but usually his language was, like the ideas which he expressed, the speech of the public which he sought to please, not slighting the grandiloquent phraseology to which the Spanish language is so well adapted.
Works: Pepita Jiménez , Las ilusiones del doctor Faustino , El comendador Mendoza , Doña Luz , and many volumes of tales and of literary criticism. Received the Bachelor's degree at Guadix, and studied law for a time at Granada. Entered journalism and politics and was deputy and senator. Enlisted as a volunteer in a war in Morocco. Elected to the Spanish Academy in 1875. Died July 19, 1891.

Como es de presumir, esta última lista sólo contiene las obras, que se distinguen mucho ó poco por su originalidad ó por su novedad, no aquellas otras, que, como la de García de Villanueva, Literature of Europe, de Hallam, y La historia de la literatura cómica de Flügel, sólo repiten lo ya conocido en sus datos y censuras, ni tampoco las que son puramente particulares.
