Pereda's language is academically correct, with some of the flavor of Cervantes; but his thought is often ponderous, or even obscure. He is at his best when he pictures the uncouth homely life of his highland peasants or simple fisher-folk. This he does with the truthfulness of the most scrupulous realist, but without stooping to pornographic detail.
We find a good example of these different elements in La Moza de Cántaro in the three sonnets of Act II, Scene III, of which the first is in the sonorous, high-sounding, oratorical style, the second, in the elegant conceits so common in Italian literature of the period, and the third in the language of every-day life. Each is well suited to the occasion and to the rôle of the speaker.
Those teachers who prefer that the students in the elementary classes should not translate English into Spanish may postpone or omit altogether this part of the exercises if they wish to do so. The language of Fortuna is so clear and simple that the story may be read to advantage in elementary classes.
