One of the stand-bys for enjoyment, especially in rainy weather, was the old barn. This had been built nearly a century previously, and was as delightful as only the pleasantest kind of old barn can be. It stood at the meeting-spot of three fences. A favorite amusement used to be an obstacle race when the barn was full of hay.
At the door of my room a tall figure awaited me, and when I recognised it as that of one of my chief's most trusted 'stand-bys, who seldom left New York, I began to wonder. He had been directed to my quarters, he said, and finding the surroundings to his liking, had awaited me there. He was not slow in making known his business, and he began with the query: 'Have you got Delbras?
But regularity of attendance is something, and on nights when winter storms, or bitter cold, or domestic contingencies of any sort, kept the "regular stand-bys" at home, he could and did fill the place of one or other of them by "taking a part." But he had no "gift" in that way, and knew it, and kept himself in the background.
These old stand-bys reach up their arms so high, and their trunks are so big and straight and smooth, that nothing can despoil them. They will stay there until the end that is, until some merciless Commissioner runs the line of a city street through their roots.
