There is something very strange and unaccountable about a tow-line. You roll it up with as much patience and care as you would take to fold up a new pair of trousers, and five minutes afterwards, when you pick it up, it is one ghastly, soul-revolting tangle.
Liza and Groholsky thought at the same moment, while they did not know what to do with their heavy hands and embarrassed eyes. . . . The petrified husband, rosy-faced, turned white. An agonising, strange, soul-revolting silence lasted for three minutes. Oh, those three minutes! Groholsky remembers them to this day. The first to move and break the silence was the husband.
"I'll show them!" muttered Rosemary McClean, wiping the blown dust from her eyes and facing the wind again that now began to carry with it the unspread taint the awful, sickening, soul-revolting smell inseparable from Hindoo funeral rites.
"Like a rat!" muttered Gordon. "Lord lean to Justice!" Barry suddenly found Natalie in need of support, for her courage, once past the crisis, was not proof against the sort of soul-revolting conflict she was now forced to witness. Barry drew her to him with an arm about her shoulders, and she rested against him with a little sigh of relief.
