They were expressed in an empty treasury, rising taxes, inflation, expropriation, the degradation of the currency. Side by side with the rise in overhead costs went the increase of parasitism among the rich and among the poor. Something-for-nothing was the order of the day. Speculation was rampant. Gambling was universal.
Their care for our forests, waters, lands, and minerals is often the only thing that stands between the public good and the something-for-nothing men, who, like the daughters of the horse-leech, are forever crying, "Give, Give."
Every man knows in his heart that the cure for everybody's trying to get something for nothing is everybody's at once getting to work doing more than he has to for the money. Then the American dollar will quit being worth fifty cents. Why doesn't he do it? Because the machinery he belongs with and that everybody belongs with consists of two great something-for-nothing machines.
