"To sum up, I claim as the distinctive characters of my pile: "1. The use of the potassic or sodic alkaline liquid conjointly with chloride of silver, and the oxide of the same, that forms through the immersion of the carbon in a chloridizing bath. The use of retort or other carbon covered with the salt of silver above specified. The arrangement and construction of my pile as I have described."
Similarly, the author of The Sodic Hydrolith clenches his argument in favour of the existence of the Philosopher's Stone, by the quotation: "Therefore, thus saith the Lord; behold I lay in Zion for a foundation a Stone, a tried Stone, a precious corner Stone, a sure foundation. He that has it shall not be confounded."
It consists of passing alternate currents of steam and air over sodic manganate heated to dull redness in an iron tube; the process has never been commercially successful, for the reason that the contents of the tube fused, and flowing over the surface of the iron rapidly destroyed the tubes or retorts, and also as soon as fusion took place, the mass became so dense that it had little or no action on the air passing over it.
Half fill with dilute hydrochloric acid three large test tubes, labelled A, B, C. Add to each a few grains of pepsin. Boil B, and make C faintly alkaline with sodic carbonate. The alkalinity may be noted by adding previously some neutral litmus solution.
It has also been noticed by Mr. A. Hollick, to whom these observations were of interest, that in heavy storms a salt film often forms upon fruit exposed to the easterly gales upon the shores of the island. The yearly average for chlorine is 0.228 grain per gallon; for sodic chloride, 0.376 grain. The total rainfall in our region for 1884, as reported by Dr.
"White quartzose sand," Paul rattled off, "sodic carbonate, slaked lime, cutlet, manganese peroxide there you have it, the finest French plate glass, made by the great St. Gobain Company, who made the finest plate glass in the world, and this is the finest piece they ever made. It cost a king's ransom. But look at it! You can't see it. You don't know it's there till you run your head against it.
In The Sodic Hydrolith, or Water Stone of the Wise we are told: "The stone is conceived below the earth, born in the earth, quickened in heaven, dies in time, and obtains eternal glory.... It is bluish-grey and green.... It flows like water, yet it makes no wet; it is of great weight, and is small."
The bottle contains 100 grammes of a strong alkaline solution smelling strongly of ammonia, and containing potash, ammonia, alcohol, glycerin, and eau de cologne. Colorigene Rigaud. A blue bottle containing 160 grammes of a clear fluid with a slight black deposit, consisting of a mixture of equal parts of a 14 per cent. solution of sodic hyposulphate, and a 4 per cent. solution of lead acetate.
