This is the liver of the Amphioxus, the simplest kind of liver that we meet in any vertebrate. In man also the liver develops, as we shall see, in the shape of a pouch-like blind sac, that forms out of the alimentary canal behind the stomach. The formation of the circulatory system in this animal is not less interesting.
*The Large Intestine.*—The large intestine is a tube from five to six feet in length and averaging about one and one half inches in diameter. The prey let go, instead of falling back into the water, or down the pouch-like gullet held agape for it, is caught by one or more of the gulls, and those greedy birds continue the fight among themselves, leaving the pelican they have robbed to go diving again. When the lung of the air-breathing Vertebrates issues from the head-cavity and enters the trunk-cavity, it follows the example of the floating bladder of the fishes, which also originates from the pharyngeal wall in the shape of a small pouch-like out-growth, but soon grows so large that, in order to find room, it has to pass far behind into the trunk-cavity.
The naked vulture neck with its pouch-like appendage of brick-red hue; the silken feathers of bluish white under the tail those precious plumes well-known and worn by the ladies of many lands under the appellation of marabout feathers all were recognised at a glance. Even quicker than either of his youthful comrades had the Hindoo identified the birds.
