At lunch we seemed to have missed the way, but an hour or two after we passed the last pony walls, and since, we struck a tent ring, ending the march actually on our old pony-tracks. There is a critical spot here with a long stretch between cairns. If we can tide that over we get on the regular cairn route, and with luck should stick to it; but everything depends on the weather.
Old Delaware hunters in the caravan told the white chief that they had seen swift pony-tracks as they hunted through the hills; and that, too, many times. The tracks showed that the ponies were strong and went quickly faster than they could follow on their jaded mounts. The white chief must not trust the solitude.
For some miles the pony-tracks were visible enough. There was no attempt to cover them. The rider was evidently pushing hard. "Where do you think he is heading for, Inspector?" "Well," said the Inspector, "this trail strikes toward the Blackfoot Reserve by way of your ranch." "My ranch!" cried Cameron. "My God! Look there!" As he spoke the ginger-colored broncho leaped into a gallop.
The feat seemed impossible, until the second morning after, when the scout pointed out to the colonel the pony-tracks up the mountainside. The Apache scouts kept track of the soldiers' movements, communicating with the main body with blanket-signals and smoke columns. The sign-language of the Indians of the South is an interesting field of study.
When the troops and the Preventive arrived on the scene of the "run," nothing remained except a multitude of pony-tracks, and occasionally, if they were very swift and very lucky, the top-masts of a schooner or brig might be seen hanging like mist against the morning sky.
The Indian trail, that of a war-party of at least fifty or sixty braves, led away southward again, into and through the timber in the distant river bottom, and there it became scattered, most of the party seeming to have ridden on towards the reservation in the darkness of the night, while others turned up-stream, and their pony-tracks led towards the point where Warren's battalion had bivouacked.
