In the South-eastern province we find in forty and forty-five fathoms on a muddy bottom in Bass Strait, Turritella sinuata, Trochus nebulosus, a Pleurotoma, an Emarginula, a Dentalium, two species of Cardita, a Cypricardia, a Venus, a Nucula, and Pectunculus holosericeus.

The terrestrial shells are all univalves. Many fossil species formerly referred to this genus, and which have been met with chiefly in marine formations, are now considered by conchologists to belong to Natica and other marine genera. Pleurotoma exorta, Brand. Upper and Middle Eocene. Ancillaria subulata, Sowerby. Barton clay.

Several of the most tropical genera have no representative fossils at Navidad; and there are only single species of Cassis, Pyrula, and Sigaretus, two of Pleurotoma and two of Terebra, but none of these species are of conspicuous size. In Patagonia, there is even still less evidence in the character of the fossils, of the climate having been formerly warmer.

I collected the following extinct shells, of which the Turritella was in great numbers: Bulla cosmophila, G.B. Sowerby. 2. Pleurotoma subaequalis, G.B. Sowerby. 3. Fusus cleryanus, d'Orbigny, "Voyage Pal." Triton leucostomoides, G.B. Sowerby. 5. Venus, probably a distinct species, but very imperfect. 7. Dentalium majus, G.B. Sowerby. This fine island is about one hundred miles in length.

Pleurotoma : 34 to 43 30 : 2 18 St. Elena. Terebra : 34 : 5 Payta. Sigaretus : 34 to 44 30 : 12 Lima. Anomia : 30 : 7 48. Perna : 30 : 1 23 Xixappa. Artemis : 30 : 5 Payta. Voluta : 34 to 44 30 : Mr. Cuming does not know of any species living on the west coast, between the equator and latitude 43 south; from this latitude a species is found as far south as Tierra del Fuego.

I sent Charley and Brown in different directions to look for water, and a small pool with brackish ferruginous nasty water was found, which made a very miserable tea, and affected our bowels. In the Mangrove creeks we found Telescopium, Pleurotoma; and heaps of oyster-shells, for the first time on our journey. Arcas were frequent, but no Cythereas.

Among other characteristic shells are Pecten Hoeninghausii, and a species of Cassidaria, and several of the genus Pleurotoma. The succession of the Lower Miocene strata of Belgium can be best studied in the environs of Kleyn Spawen, a village situated about seven miles west of Maestricht, in the old province of Limburg in Belgium.
