Before evening new contract-boots, bought from the Mukhbir, were distributed to the soldiers and all the quarrymen, who limped painfully on their poor bare feet: next day all wore their well-hidden old boots. Early on March 14th we ascended the Wady el-Kaimah, which showed a singular spectacle, and read us another lecture upon the diversity of formation which distinguishes this region.
At Zagazig they were joined by the venerable wag and trickster, Haji Wali, and having reached Suez they embarked on the gunboat, the "Mukhbir," for Moilah, which they reached on December 19th. Burton landed with studied ceremony, his invariable plan when in the midst of savage or semi-civilised people. The gunboat saluted, the fort answered with a rattle and patter of musketry.
Lieutenant Yusuf, who had this morning rejoined the Expedition, brought our mails from the Sambuk, which I had ordered by letter at El-'Akabah; and reported that his Highness's frigate Sinnar, an old friend, would relieve the lively Mukhbir in taking us to our last journey southwards. Rations for men and mules, and supplies for ourselves, all were coming.
We then fell into the Wady Jibbah; passed the Jebel el-Kibrit, examined M. Philipin's work, and, led over a very vile and very long "short cut," found ourselves once more on board the Mukhbir. The chief stores are: Wheat, always procurable, per Ardebb, ten to twelve dollars. Barley, always procurable, per Ardebb, five to six dollars. Eggs, thirty-five to the shilling.
First they steamed to El Wijh, in the "Sinnar," which had taken the place of the Mukhbir, and then marched inland to the ancient mines of Abul Maru. But Burton now saw the futility of attempting to proceed further. On April 10th they were back again at El Wijh, on the 18th at Moilah and on the 20th at Suez. In the meantime, Mrs. Burton had left Trieste, in order to join her husband.
The two Shaykhs, 'Alayan and Hasan el-'Ukbi, were to be paid off end dismissed with due ceremony; provisions were to be brought from the fort to the cove; useless implements to be placed in store; mules to be embarked no joke without a pier! and last, but not least, the ballastless Mukhbir was to be despatched with a mail for Suez.
