The poor, sickly, shamefaced woman shall be healed, and the little girl shall not suffer. II. We have next the extinction and rekindling of Jairus's glimmer of hope. Distances in Capernaum were short, and the messenger would soon find Jesus. There was little sympathy in the harsh, bald announcement of the death, or in the appended suggestion that the Rabbi need not be further troubled.

Mark's date appears to be later, but he may have anticipated the feast in his narrative, in order to keep the whole of the incidents relating to Matthew's apostleship together. Jairus's knowledge of Jesus is implied in the story, and perhaps Jesus' acquaintance with him. I. We note, first, the agonised appeal and the immediate answer. Desperation makes men bold.

The story of Jairus's daughter is, as it were, cut in two by that of the poor invalid woman. What an impression of calm consciousness of power and of leisurely dignity is made by Christ's having time to pause, even on His way to a dying sufferer, in order to heal, as if parenthetically, this other afflicted one! How Jairus must have chafed at the delay!

Here he healed the centurion's servant and Peter's mother-in-law, and multitudes of the lame and the blind and persons possessed of devils; and here, also, he raised Jairus's daughter from the dead.

The narrative of the healing of the woman is embedded in the account of the raising of Jairus's daughter. Mark the impression of calm consciousness of power and leisurely dignity produced by Christ's having time to pause, even on such an errand, in order to heal, by the way, the other sufferer.

The doleful music and the shrill shrieks of Eastern mourning, which met them as they entered Jairus's house, disturbed the sanctity of the hour, and were in strong contrast with the majestic calmness of Jesus. Not amid venal lamentations and excited cries will He do His work.

"The raising of the dead to life? Surely death is the appointed end of every animal ay, of every species, and of man among the rest." "Who denies it? But is premature death? the death of Jairus's daughter, of the widow's son at Nain, the death of Jesus himself, in the prime of youth and vigour or rather that gradual decay of ripe old age, through which I now, thank God, so fast am travelling?
