Delicate, hair-like filaments, not unlike the pile on velvet, called cilia, spring from the epithelial lining of the air tubes. Their constant wavy movement is always upwards and outwards, towards the mouth. Thus any excessive secretion, as of bronchitis or catarrh, is carried upwards, and finally expelled by coughing.
The epithelium of a mucous membrane is regenerated in the same way as that on a cutaneous surface. Epithelial cells have the power of living for some time after being separated from their normal surroundings, and of growing again when once more placed in favourable circumstances. Cartilage.
*The Mouth.*—This is an oval-shaped cavity situated at the very beginning of the canal. In cases of long continued increase of tension minute permanent vesicles form in the epithelial layers, particularly in the superficial portion. Alteration in the shape of the cornea occurs only rarely in adult life.
In the same way the epithelial cells of the mammary glands “select” the suitable substances from the blood.
If this structure be the soul-endowed one of man, the vital principle imparted is that which fashions the epithelial tools, and uses them, as well in laying the embryological foundation, as in crowning its work with that many-colored "dome of thought flashing the white radiance of eternity." Mr.
