For a cross-section of the industrial revolution in New England, read C. F. Adams's Three Episodes of Massachusetts History . Davis R. Dewey's Financial History of the United States is standard; and A. C. McLaughlin's The Court, the Constitution and Parties , gives the best account of the beginnings of judicial supremacy, while W. G. Sumner's History of American Banking tells the story of the banks by sections.
The aim of the short-story is always to present a cross-section of life in such a vivid manner that the importance of the incident becomes universal. Some short-stories are told with the definite end in view of telling a story for the sake of exploiting a plot. The Cask of Amontillado is all action in comparison with The Masque of the Red Death.
I expect to make other trips for similar purposes, and I shall make them in the same way. In the last war, I had seen great factories; but until I saw some of the new present-day plants, I had not thoroughly visualized our American war effort. Of course, I saw only a small portion of all our plants, but that portion was a good cross-section, and it was deeply impressive.
To understand the problem, the annexed cross-section of a single room will afford some aid by showing the relations of the walls to the chamber and its ceiling. The chamber, with its vaulted ceiling, was constructed over a solid core of masonry, laid simultaneously with the walls, which was removed after the latter had seasoned and settled.
"The river above this for some miles was no better for the purpose of cross-section measurement.
If the lump still shows distinctly after the operations described, the cross-section of the tube will be as in h, and the tube will be likely to break if ever reheated at this point after it becomes cold. The operations d, e, f, and g may be repeated upon it, and it may be possible to get it to come out all right.
It carried with it the further condition that no one should be discharged on account of physical condition, except, of course, in the case of contagious disease. I think that if an industrial institution is to fill its whole role, it ought to be possible for a cross-section of its employees to show about the same proportions as a cross-section of a society in general.
On account of the shoal water and the great height of the outer caissons in comparison with their cross-section, it seemed advisable to mould them in two sections.
This arises from the fact that by the doubling of potential the two outside mains are reduced to one-quarter the cross-section otherwise necessary. A saving of 75 per cent. would thus be assured, but the addition of a third, or compensating, conductor of the same cross-section as one of the outside mains reduces the total saving to 62 1/2 per cent.
The life of a squirrel or of a honey-bee furnishes also a cross-section through all the sciences from the inorganic world up to man. If in tracing life histories we take care to select typical subjects which exemplify perhaps thousands of similar cases, we shall materially shorten the road leading toward insight into nature.
