There is a vast difference betwixt the case of one who follows the forms and laws of his country, and of another who will undertake to regulate and change them; of whom the first pleads simplicity, obedience, and example for his excuse, who, whatever he shall do, it cannot be imputed to malice; 'tis at the worst but misfortune: "Quis est enim, quem non moveat clarissimis monumentis testata consignataque antiquitas?"

That is from a book in which we have only 'the husks and shells of sciences, all the kernel being forced out, as the author informs us, 'by the torture and press of the method. But it was a method which saved them, notwithstanding. This is the book that contains the 'nuts, and this is the kernel that goes in that particular shell or a corner of it, 'Antiquitas seculi juventus mundi.

And this, we repeat, is the crowning gift of the poet: the power of conceiving and representing man. Here at least the saying is a true one: Antiquitas saeculi, juventus mundi; rendered by our poet in "The Day-dream," For we are ancients of the earth, And in the morning of the times.

Antiquitas seculi iuventus mundi; what we call antiquity and are accustomed to revere as such was the youth of the world. But it is the old age and increasing years of the world the time in which we are now living that deserves in truth to be called antiquity. We are really the ancients, the Greeks and Romans were younger than we, in respect to the age of the world.

She could borrow the freedom of the old Roman lips, to repronounce, in her own new dialect, not their anticipation of her veto only, but her eternal affirmation, the word of her consulship, the rule of her nobility, the nobility of being, being in the human, the nobility of manliness, the divinity of State, the true doctrine of it; and, to speak truly, 'Antiquitas seculi, juventus mundi.
