No lapse of time can ever efface the impression of the 107th Psalm, as read by Mrs. Fry with such extraordinary emphasis and intonation, that it seemed to make the simple reading a commentary. We find in the annals of her life the particulars of another visit to the George Hibbert convict-ship, in 1734.

She fixed her eyes on the minister and straightway forgot Anne and the Judge and Fairfax, for the minister was reading the 107th Psalm, and the words that fell on Judy's ears were pregnant with meaning to this daughter of a sailor "They that go down to the sea in ships " Dr. Grennell was a plain man, a man of rugged exterior but he was a man of spiritual power and he knew his subject.

Then they cried unto the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them out of their distresses. If I were asked to give a reason why I believed the Old Testament to be an inspired and divine book, as well as the New, I could not do better, I think, than to lay my hand on this 107th psalm, and say, This is my reason for believing the Old Testament to be inspired.

The words of the 107th Psalm came to my lips: "Oh that men would therefore praise the Lord for His goodness, and declare the wonders that He doeth for the children of men." He put his hands over his face, and said presently, in a smothered voice, "I had just begun to pray for the old man." I could not say any more for happy tears, less for "the captive exile" than for my own Harry.

This mercy of the Lord quite melted me, and I recollected his words, which I saw thus verified in the 107th Psalm 'O give thanks unto the Lord, for he is good, for his mercy endureth for ever. Hungry and thirsty, their souls fainted in them. They cried unto Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them out of their distresses.

During all that time Cairns visited his brother twice every day, he taught himself to apply to the patient the galvanic treatment which had been prescribed, and brought him an endless supply of books, periodicals, and good things to eat and smoke. Perhaps, too, this verse from the 107th Psalm was the one usually sung on such occasions.
