In a consideration of the views held by the Babylonians and Assyrians of the life after death, to which we now turn, it will again be a specimen of the religious literature that will serve as our main guide. It is the merit of Dr. See above, p. 511. See my remarks in Delitzsch and Haupt's Beiträge zur Assyriologie, iii. 376. I Kings, v. 11.
Thus the use of the original is convenient as it avoids committal to any one of the numerous theories of theologians or Hebraists. Delitzsch has sifted the evidence with scrupulous care and impartiality, whilst Renan's monograph possesses both erudition and charm.
Burned with the palace of Persepolis which Alexander, the Great Sinner, in a drunken orgy, destroyed only fragments of the fargards remain. These tell of creation, effected in six epochs, and of a pairi-daêza. Delitzsch voluminously asked: Wo lag das Paradies? There it is. There is the primal paradise.
Now it so happens that the whole country west of the great Pallakopas channel, was called by the Assyrians "Mashu." Professor Delitzsch identifies this Mashu of the cuneiform inscriptions, with the "Mesha" mentioned in Scriptures, as the home of Havilah.
A collective personification of the seven evil spirits. Ishum. IIR. 51, 19c and 4a. Khashur is also used as a name for the cedar. See Delitzsch, Assyr. Handwörterbuch, p. 295a. The one published by the writer. Hammurabi is the conqueror of Palestine mentioned in Gen. xlv. under the name Amraphel. See, e.g., Hommel, Altisraelitische Ueberlieferung, p. 106. Num. xxi. 14.
For this separate outflow there is the incontestable evidence of Pliny and other authors quoted by Professor Delitzsch. I may here also remark, that anciently the Persian Gulf extended much farther inland than it does now.
The ever bold Delitzsch decides that "its mode of motion and its form were changed," but closes the controversy by adding, "of the original condition of the serpent it is, certainly, impossible to frame to ourselves a conjecture." All this is mere moonshine.
