Our favourite walks were away in the country through Willingdon to Polegate, over Beachy Head, returning through East Dean to Litlington and its famed tea-garden, or across Pevensey Levels to Wartling, for we always preferred the more unfrequented ways.

The ancient "Lamb Inn" has an Early English crypt which may be seen on application. The most popular excursion from Eastbourne after "The Head" is to Willingdon, near which is Hampden Park and Wannock Glen, and, farther afield, Jevington.

Willingdon has an interesting old church and is pleasantly situated, but the village is too obviously the "place to spend a happy day" to call for further comment. On the other hand, Jevington with its ancient but over-restored church, is quite unspoilt and, lying in one of the most beautiful of the Down combes, should certainly be visited.

Lord Willingdon, as a constitutional Governor, chose from the non-Brahman majority in the Council all the three Indian Ministers who form part of the new Provincial Government and preside over the "transferred" departments. This is the most startling transformation scene which any of the Provincial elections has produced. The non-Brahmans have got the chance which they have long claimed.

"A sweet morning, my lady," he cried. "And promise of a fair day's work." The boy turned his face to the wall. "Mr. Joy, sir!" "Well, Piper." "There's a man on a horse." "Where?" "Rithe away oop a-top o th' hill over Willingdon on the old drove- road from Lewes." The Parson sprang to his feet. "Sharp work!" he said with a grin at Kit's back. "Well done you, boy!" Kit leapt to the window.
