Even while in gallop, his neck slightly curved, and his proud figure, displayed against the smooth sward, called forth expressions of admiration. The rider was a young man of twenty or over; and his light curling hair and white-red complexion distinguished him from all his competitors who were, without exception, dark-skinned men.
That man must indeed be careworn who would resist it. Certainly, the broad-shouldered young giant who had been momentarily troubled by the white-red ghost of poverty was not so minded. And she too now ignored me, and busied herself in gathering up their few belongings and slinging them on her back.
