I had seen at the World's Fair an exhibit of these thumbmarks collected by a Frenchman who has made an exhaustive study of the subject, and had learned there for the first time that no two thumbs in the world can make the same mark. I knew, therefore, that this slip of glass would at any time tell me whether or not a suspected man were guilty.

"Thumbmarks," says my scientific friend hastily in English. "You show me how to do it," I say as quickly. He signs first, and I look over his shoulder. He is displaying more readiness than I should have expected. The book is ruled in broad transverse lines, and has a space for a name, for a number, and a thumbmark.

Two small groups of people stood listlessly outside the building, the candidates' agents on the one side of the entrance, and on the other the patwaris the village scribes who keep the official land records brought in from the different villages to attest the signatures and thumbmarks of the voters.

For this side attack on me roused the boatswain to reproduce his jokes about elbow-grease versus parley-voo and the pianner, and to add a general principle on his own account to the effect that it was nothing to him if a lad had been "edicated" in a young ladies' boarding-school, so long as he'd been taught to rub brass till you could "see something more of your face than thumbmarks in it."
