There she had seen suffering softened by gentleness, there empty lives were filled from generous hearts, and men and women inspired to make new and better starts. She had visioned the nobleness of giving and the unanswered call of her mother-nature had responded. She was not fully well, she was not deeply living, she had never fulfilled the best of self, and she hungered for the hospital.

With all his rank masculinity, there was a curious feminine undertone in him which revealed itself in the quality of his voice, the delicate texture of his skin, the gentleness of his touch and ways, the attraction he had for children and the common people. A lady in the West, writing to me about him, spoke of his "great mother-nature."

Perhaps had willingly ignored it, as introducing a complication oppressive to his indolence, to his hodiernal philosophy. And now he arraigned mother-nature, the very divinity whom hitherto he had called upon to justify him. All at once he grew cold to Nancy. The lulled objections to matrimony awoke in him again; again he felt that he had made a fool of himself.

They are not the sort of women to turn a man's head, but they are the sort of women to lay hold of a man's heart very gently at first, so that he hardly knows that they have touched it, and then, with soft, clinging tendrils that wrap themselves tighter and tighter year by year around it, and draw him closer and closer till, as, one by one, the false visions and hot passions of his youth fade away, the plain homely figure fills more and more his days till it grows to mean for him all the better, more lasting, true part of life till he feels that the strong, gentle mother-nature that has stood so long beside him has been welded firmly into his own, and that they twain are now at last one finished whole.

It was voted a wonderfully touching performance, and he called it "The Stowaway." "O Mother-nature, kind in touch and tone. Act as we may, thou clearest to thine own" I don't know that I should tell this story. When the purser related it to me I know it was his intention to write it out for a magazine.
