Leusden and Schaaf translate the Syriac thus: "Hoc autem, quod praecipio, non tanquam laudo vos, quia non progressi estis, sed ad id, quod minus est, descendistis." The only supper which he ever enjoined to Christians, was the latter. This spiritual supper was to be eternal and universal.
Leusden says that he had offered to give a sum of money to a very poor Jew at Amsterdam, if he would only once deliberately pronounce the name Jehovah; but he refused it by saying that he did not dare." Horae Solitariae, vol. i. p. 3. "A Brahmin will not pronounce the name of the Almighty, without drawing down his sleeve and placing it on his mouth with fear and trembling."
The Greek word, here rendered "should rise," is anastaseos from anastasis. It is a substantive, not a verb. Professor Leusden, in his Latin Testament, renders it "ex resurrectione mortuorum" by a resurrection from the dead. The verb, to raise, is egeiro, and is six times applied to the raising of Christ from the dead in 1 Cor xv.
