The Shekawattee brigade was moved well to the right, in support of Brigadier Cureton. When I observed the enemy's encampment, and saw it was full of infantry, I immediately brought upon it Brigadier Godby's brigade, by changing front, and taking the enemy's infantry en reverse. They drove them before them, and took some guns without a check.

"To be sure!" said I, and getting upon my feet, reeled for very weakness and should have fallen but that Godby propped me with his shoulder; supported thus and despite Godby's remonstrances, I staggered to and fro and gradually found my strength return in some small measure, whereupon I began to dress myself forthwith. "Whither are we sailing, Godby?"

Hereupon he glances at me from the corners of his eyes and shakes his head: "Your face is bloody, Martin, are ye hurt?" "My belly's empty, Adam." "Why, I guessed as much, shipmate, Godby's bringing ye the wherewithal to fill it. In the meantime I'll free you o' your bilboes awhile, though I must lock you up again that you may be found snug and secure in the morning."

So at Godby's word, in came two armed fellows and marched out Resolution Day, his head still bowed and his fetters jangling dismally. "You'll never hang her, Adam!" said I, when we were alone. "You cannot, man you shall not!" "Lord, Martin," said he, sitting on his great peruke and looking askance at me, "Lord, what a marvellous thick skull is thine!"

I ordered the cavalry to take ground to the right and left by brigades, thus displaying the heads of the infantry columns, and as they reached the hard ground I directed them to deploy into line. Brigadier Godby's brigade was in direct echelon to the rear of the right the Shekawattee infantry in like manner to the rear of my left.

Having looked them over each and every, Penfeather spat, and setting them in Godby's charge, ordered them to go on before. "Well, Martin," says he as we followed together, "and how think ye of my lambs?" "Call them raging tigers, rather " "Nay," says he, "tigers be cleanly creatures, I've heard." "'A God's name, Adam, why truck with such ill rogues? Sure there be many honest mariners to be had?"
