Hence the famous oracular responses of antiquity; hence the long train of conjurers, fortune-tellers, astrologers, necromancers, magicians, wizards, and witches, that have been found in all places and at all times; nor have superior knowledge and civilization been sufficient to extirpate such characters, by demonstrating the futility and absurdity of their views.
And yet Burman Buddhism, in all conscience, is pitiable enough its temples infested by fortune-tellers, witches, and fakirs, its faith mingled with gross superstitions and charms to propitiate the "nats" or spirits which are supposed to inhabit streams, forests, villages, houses, etc., and to have infinite power over the lives and fortunes of the people.
There were not even to be found in all their country either sophists, wandering fortune-tellers, keepers of infamous houses, or dealers in gold and silver trinkets, because there was no money.
The “Individual” has now concluded his labors, and he hopes not without profit to the community at large. He has heard it urged that this book will merely advertise the fortune-tellers, and that they will go on driving a more flourishing trade than ever.
Or, again, if we connect what is said of the pillows with what immediately follows about the kerchiefs put upon the head, we may suppose that both are but parts of a fantastic dress, such as was often worn by pretended prophets and fortune-tellers, and which they may have made those wear, also, who came before them.
Other boys in all parts of the South and of the corn belt began producing from 100 to 200 bushels of corn to the acre in the same way. Because man has lacked accurate knowledge about the world around him, he has been the credulous victim of countless generations of swindlers, fakers, fortune-tellers, mountebanks, and others experienced in chicanery.
Suffice to say that boa-constrictors, half-naked savages, dye-woods, Jesuit’s bark, cockatoos, scorpions and ring-tailed monkeys, are not, as he had hitherto supposed, the only contributions to the happiness of mankind afforded by South America, for the Province of Brazil grows fortune-tellers of a very superior quality as to respectability and neatness of appearance.
It seems that women of this particular tribe were regularly trained by the men to be capering priestesses or fortune-tellers, if you like who performed some extraordinary sacred antics of a mystical kind, much after the fashion of the howling dervishes.
For weeks the chances of the parties have been discussed and betted upon; even the schoolboys have talked chariots, chariot-drivers, and horses. The fortune-tellers have been consulted about them; dreamers have dreamed the winners; and many an underhand attempt, sometimes including the hocussing of men or horses, has been made to corrupt the sport.
And I may add that the language in which it is written, though not the "deep" or grammatical Gipsy, in which no English words occur as for instance in the Lord's Prayer, as given by Mr Borrow in his appendix to the Gipsies in Spain is still really a fair specimen of the Rommany of the present day, which is spoken at races by cock-shysters and fortune-tellers.
