On the streets we met the baron who had been with us on our voyage from Tampico. He told us that after one day in Mérida, he and his lady decided that they preferred Progreso, and were stopping there, going down upon the day-train when they wished to visit Mérida.
It happened quite recently I think it must have been on April the second of 1917 that I was making the long pilgrimage on a day-train from the remote place where I dwell to the city of New York.
Petersburg at night, so we abandoned the courier train, and took the slow day-train for Kiev, the old capital of Russia, that she might see more of the country. But now I come to my reward and her chagrin. Between Moscow and Kiev we were snowed in for sixteen hours.
The methods differ, governed by the connections, and a clerk suddenly transferred from a day-train to a night-train on the same route, unless thoroughly informed of the train schedules, of close and remote connections, the time of the dispatch of direct closed pouches from many post-offices, stage route schedules, etc., which knowledge, even approximating correctness, would be extraordinary, would be almost as much at a loss as if transferred to another route, excepting his knowledge of the location of the post-offices on his own line.
These we must leave, and prepare for the return journey on the night-train, feeling grateful that our busy fellow-travelers are to have an opportunity to refresh themselves. The work performed in a railway post-office on a night-train differs somewhat from that on a day-train, yet maintaining the same general principle of distribution.
