The State, in the condition I have described it, was delivered into the hands of Lord Chatham a great and celebrated name; a name that keeps the name of this country respectable in every other on the globe. It may be truly called Clarum et venerabile nomen Gentibus, et multum nostrae quod proderat urbi.
But all my father ever said, to evince pride of ancestry, was in honor of William Caxton, citizen and printer in the reign of Edward IV., Clarum et venerabile nomen! an ancestor a man of letters might be justly vain of. "Heus," said my father, stopping short, and lifting his eyes from the Colloquies of Erasmus, "salve multum, jucundissime."
Before returning from the author to his books, it is interesting to know how he and his circle appeared at this period to some who did not belong to them. Gibbon, for instance, visited Paris in the spring of 1763. "The moment," he says, "was happily chosen. At the close of a successful war the British name was respected on the continent; clarum et venerabile nomen gentibus.
Falding Clarum et venerabile nomen. "Is Saul also among the prophets?" 1 Samuel x. 12. Ever since we could hear or notice sayings and things, and for long before we were here to do either, this text has been in the world as a kind of proverb-question: "Is Saul also among the prophets?"

It is not the purpose, nor is it within the scope of this brief memorial, to delineate the character of this eminent citizen. Clarum et venerabile nomen "a fairer tribute shall one day grace his honorable tomb." He belongs now to history.
