Unless Milton and Carlyle had co-operated to make it, I think, any translation of the Agamemnon which so many have tried to translate would be fatiguing and a great bore to read. It may not be amiss to quote three lines from George Peel's David and Bethsabe, which have been often called Aeschylean in audacity:

No more docile or capable pupil could have been desired by any master in any art than the author of David and Bethsabe has found in the writer of this second act. He has indeed surpassed his model, if not in grace and sweetness, yet in taste or tact of expression, in continuity and equality of style.

George Peele's masterpiece, David and Bethsabe, was also, in many respects, a fine play, though its beauties were poetic rather than dramatic, consisting not in the characterization which is feeble but in the Eastern luxuriance of the imagery. There is one noble chorus O proud revolt of a presumptuous man,

His best plays are The Arraignment of Paris , and The Battle of Alcazar , and among his poems Polyhymnia , and The Honour of the Garter . Other works are Old Wives' Tale , and David and Fair Bethsabe . P. wrote in melodious and flowing blank verse, with abundance of fancy and brilliant imagery, but his dramas are weak in construction, and he is often bombastic and extravagant.
