In traveling through the country on a street-speaking tour about the first thing a speaker observes is the poor judgement shown by the local comrades in the selection of street corners for their meetings. The chosen corner is usually where the down-and-outs and drunks congregate and is hemmed about by cheap noisy saloons.
"You'll have to stop this!" declared one. "Stop?" cried Gerrity. "What do you mean?" "There's to be no more street-speaking during the strike." "Who says so?" "Orders from the chief." "But we've got a permit." "All permits revoked. Cut it out." "But this is an outrage!" "We don't want any argument, young man " "But we're within our rights here." "Forget it, young feller!"
"And the fifth member of the town council is yourself, ex-officio Mr. Enos Cartwright, mayor and company-superintendent." Again there was no answer. "You have an ordinance against street-speaking; and at the same time your company owns the saloon-buildings, the boarding-houses, the church and the school. Where do you expect the citizens to do their speaking?"
About midnight came Lawyer Norwood and Dr. Service. Both of these men had protested against the street-speaking at this time; but of course, when it came to comrades in trouble, they could not resist the appeal to their sympathies.
