His reasons, however, were temporarily good, "because many wanted books and skill to read." At that time, and for a century later, many congregations had but one or two psalm-books, one of which was often bound with the church Bible and from which the deacon lined the psalm.

Punishments were sudden, and inquiry was never made into them, however brutal. There was the fire for Bibles, Testaments, and psalm-books; galleys for men; prisons and convents for women; and gibbets for preachers. In 1720 a large number of prisoners were captured in the famous old quarry near Nismes, long the seat of secret Protestant worship.

The custom survived from the time when psalm-books were in the hands of but few and the "lining" of the psalm was therefore necessary. There was no haste to be done with the psalm. Why should there be? They had only one Sabbath in the week, and the whole day was before them.

In grassy fields, he downe dooth make me lye: he gently-leads mee, quiet-Waters by. He dooth return my soul: for his name-sake in paths of justice leads-me-quietly. Yea, though I walk in dale of deadly-shade ile fear none yll, for with me thou wilt be thy rod, thy staff eke, they shall comfort mee. But few of these psalm-books of Ainsworth are now in existence; but few indeed came to New England.
