Were he a less reserved man I should make some remark upon the subject. Of the other things in his cabin there was nothing worthy of mention uniform coats, a camp-stool, small looking-glass, tobacco-box, and numerous pipes, including an oriental hookah which, by-the-bye, gives some colour to Mr. Milne's story about his participation in the war, though the connection may seem rather a distant one.
With all these men I afterwards lived on affectionate terms; but I will here speak specially of the last, because from that time he was joined with me in so much of the work that I did. Mr. Millais was engaged to illustrate Framley Parsonage, but this was not the first work he did for the magazine. In the second number there is a picture of his accompanying Monckton Milne's Unspoken Dialogue.
A frontal attack by General Milne's forces was ordered on the central position at Doiran; considerable losses were incurred, and gains were secured that made no essential difference to the situation.
Milne's description of it, taken out of the Chinese repository, as I think it will be better than my own: "We bent our steps to the Tien-fung, called by foreigners the Ruined Pagoda. Foreigners make for it as soon as they enter the east gate.
"Yes, yes; a pretty good thing. Macaulay can do better than that though. I know him very well. I have traveled with him. Where was it we first met at Damascus? No, no; it was in Italy." "So," said I, "you have been over the same ground with your countryman, the author of 'Eothen'? There has been some discussion in America as to who he is. I have heard Milne's name mentioned." "Milne's?
I wonder why something is not done with Sir George Milne's force at Salonica. Apparently all is not even yet plain sailing in Greece. There is still intrigue going on. I do not think Venizelos is going to have everything his own way, even now King Constantine has gone to Switzerland. Switzerland is now, I think, the theatre of important diplomatic intrigues.
