The Angel of Death moves at no laggard pace when once he begins his march with his sword drawn in his hand. Thus far I have been quoting from, or referring to, authorities which are accessible to any one with an adequate command of books at his elbow the chroniclers and the historians named, the Foedera, the Rolls of Parliament, and such authorities as whoever chooses may consult for himself.

In the Foedera there is a pardon passed to the archbishop, which at first made me suspect that he had taken some part in behalf of the royal children, as he is pardoned for all murders, treasons, concealments, misprisons, riots, routs, &c. but this pardon is not only dated Dec. 13, some months after he had crowned Richard; but, on looking farther, I find such pardons frequently granted to the most eminent of the clergy.

In Rymer's 'Foedera' mention is made of four barristers who were appointed counsellors to Charles I., one of whom, Sir John Finch, in a patent of precedence is designated "King's Counsel;" but it is not improbable that the royal martyr had other special counsellors whose names have not been recorded.

/Political History of England/, vol. v., 280-1. Ehses, op. cit., p. xxxi., sqq. Brewer, /Reign of Hen. VIII./, ii., 346-51. Ehses, 120-5. Brewer, op. cit., 466-7. /Pol. Hist. of England/, v., 301. /Letters and Papers, Henry VIII./, iv., 64-78. Rymer, /Foedera/, xiv., 405. Ehses, op. cit., 163-4. Ehses, 167 sqq. Gairdner, /Lollardy and the Reformation/, i., 300. Gairdner, /Hist. of Eng.

Fortunately the scantiness of historical narrative is compensated by the growing fulness and abundance of our State papers. Rymer's Foedera is rich in diplomatic and other documents for this period, and from this time we have a storehouse of political and social information in the Parliamentary Rolls.
