It may be that when the jolly companion has become a loathsome sot, and his mind is ablaze with the fire of drink, and he sees uncouth beasts in horrid presence, that inherited memories haunt him with visions of the beast-gods worshipped by his ancestors at the very time when the appetite for stimulants was created.
Was there then, after all, something in the old heathen worship, something more than the mere deifying of men, animals, and elements? The thought gripped me was there? Later, a question repeated itself. What were they, those Beast-gods, and the others?
On the monuments, it is true, Ammon appears in semi-human form with the body of a man and the head of a ram. But this only shows that he was in the usual chrysalis state through which beast-gods regularly pass before they emerge as full-blown anthropomorphic gods.
On each side, I looked, and saw more, continually. The mountains were full of strange things Beast-gods, and Horrors so atrocious and bestial that possibility and decency deny any further attempt to describe them. And I I was filled with a terrible sense of overwhelming horror and fear and repugnance; yet, spite of these, I wondered exceedingly.
The divine patrons of fire are found in all parts of the world, varying in form and function according to the degrees of advancement of the various communities, from the beast-gods of the Redmen to the departmental deities of the Maoris, Babylonians, Mexicans, and others, and to the more complicated gods of Hindus, Greeks, and Romans.
