A colored stable-boy stood at Fan Tan's wicked-looking head and addressed in varied tone and temper a pair of flattened ears. "Whoa! Baby-doll! Dat's ma honey dat's ma petty chile . . . Whoa! Yuh no-'coun' houn', yuh!"
I haven't see you this long time. There's an old acquaintance of yours inside and a cup of tea for you." The wind was whistling up the street, the first drops of a rain storm starred the pavement, and there was a pleasant glow behind Mr. Tan's window-panes. But there was something stronger yet that drove Peter into the shop.
That Tower down in the Market Place, old Tan's curiosity shop, the sea these were the things that kept me going. Afterwards in London it was the same. Things were hard so I made them into a story I coloured them up. Nothing hurt when everything was romance. I made Clare romance too that was the way, you see, that all my life was bound up so closely together.
But just as I was staring at it again, I saw old Tanner, who lived in one of the cottages below our house, settling his double ladder against a wall. I screamed out with pleasure 'I'll have Tan's ladder, I said, and so I did. 'A' was always Tan's ladder after that.
