The fifteen-year-old Josephine or "Peppi" Lang and Delphine von Schauroth seem to have touched his heart most deeply; to the latter he dedicated a piano composition; to the former he taught double counterpoint, a forbidding subject which the two doubtlessly found gay enough.
Among the latter are the great "Deutscher Siegesmarsch," two mazurkas, and an impromptu, "In the Twilight." Her eulogistic biographer calls these pieces "Real pearls among piano works." Delphine von Schauroth was another brilliant pianist, much praised by Schumann and excessively admired by Mendelssohn. A Sonata Brilliant and a Capriccio are among her best works.
Cases like the latter have been described also by First Lieutenant von Schauroth. Under these circumstances, says Holzhausen, it appears almost incomprehensible that there were men who withstood a misery which surpassed all human dimensions.
Lieutenant Schauroth was sitting in despair at a table in an inn when one nobleman pressed a double Louisd'or into his hand and another placed his sleigh at the lieutenant's disposal to continue his journey. In Tapiau a carpenter's helper, himself a very poor man, begged among his friends to obtain a suit of clothes for Sergeant Steinmueller, whom he had never known before.
