On the right and left of the aquarium the old sailor dexterously built up larger pieces of rock-work, intermixed with bits of red seaweed that grows in the form of a feathery plume, called by naturalists the "bryopsis plumosa," than which no more graceful marine plant can be found.

An ordinary specimen of plumosa was also taken, and the two were placed in similar vessels side by side, and exposed to full sunshine; by afternoon the specimen of plumosa had yielded gas enough for an analysis, while the larger and finer smaragdina had scarcely produced a bubble.

After considerable difficulty I was able to obtain a large and beautiful specimen of Anthea cereus, var. smaragdina, which is a far more beautiful green than that with which I had been before operating the dingy brownish-olive variety, plumosa.

Thus, then, the coloring matter described as chlorophyl by Lankester has really been mainly derived from that of the endodermal algae of the variety plumosa, which predominates at Naples; while the anthea-green of Krukenberg must mainly consist of the green pigment of the ectoderm, since the Trieste variety evidently does not contain algae in any great quantity.

"Well, Verny," he said, "have you been getting those pretty sea-anemones? come here and show me them. Ah, I declare you've got one of those famous white plumosa fellows among them. What a lucky little chap you are!" Vernon was delighted. "Mind you take care of them," said Russell. "Where did you find them?" "I have been down the shore getting them." "And have you had a pleasant morning?"

These ought to be enough for some months, as it is not safe to add too many at once. Then the green weeds Codium tomentosum and Cladophora may be tried; and, still later, the beautiful Bryopsis plumosa. But it is much better to be content with a few Ulvae, and others of that class, to begin with; for a half dozen of these will support quite a variety of animal life.
