At this moment the clergyman entered the cottage. Mr. Blattergowl, though a dreadful proser, particularly on the subject of augmentations, localities, teinds, and overtures in that session of the General Assembly, to which, unfortunately for his auditors, he chanced one year to act as moderator, was nevertheless a good man, in the old Scottish presbyterian phrase, God-ward and man-ward.
At the present moment, however, it is the subject in its man-ward aspect that I wish specially to keep in view, partly because some limitation is obviously necessary, and partly also because it is this of which Christ Himself had most to say. What, then, is Christ's idea of righteousness? In other words, what did He teach concerning the good life?
Submission to him without condition, without limit, they both preached and practised. Unconditional submission was as constantly on their lips God-ward as it was sparingly uttered man-ward. No picture of the "good parson" that was ever drawn could exceed in beauty that of the Rev.
What! does He profess to do for me what He cannot? No, no. He "is not a man, that He should lie: neither the Son of man, that He should repent:" and I tell you that His scheme of salvation is two-sided it is God-ward and man-ward. It contemplates me as well as it contemplates the great God. It is not a scheme of salvation, merely it is a scheme of restoration.
One cannot find the slightest reference in any of his sayings that would indicate that he looked upon himself in any other light except the overwhelming sense that it was his mission to bring in the new dispensation by fulfilling the old, and then carrying it another great step forward, which he did in a wonderful way both God-ward and man-ward.
If they lost their ears, it is satisfactory to remember that they made those of their mutilators tingle with a rhetoric more sharp than polite. A worthy New England deacon once described a brother in the church as a very good man Godward, but rather hard man-ward.
It needs the God-impelled life and voice of the prophet with his face to the future, both God-ward and man-ward, burning with an undivided devotion to truth and righteousness.
