All pleasure, we read, comes from the perception of Zweckmaeszigkeit, that is, the quality of being adapted to the furtherance of an end. Since man is meant to be happy and naturally seeks happiness, human suffering affects us primarily as a 'maladaptation', and so gives us pain. But in this very pain our reason recognizes a higher 'adaptation', since we are incited by it to activity.
The absence of intelligence, which I shall term incapacity, is the one absolutely fatal defect from which life may suffer. Incapacity embraces maladaptation, dulness, feebleness, sickness, and death.
Discoveries in science are made only by near-sighted specialists, while the influence of public sentiment and policy still works systematically against enlightenment. The maladaptation of sense to its objects has a second consequence: that speculation is in a way nobler for man than direct perception.
Conflict is only maladaptation, but there is maladaptation everywhere.
Heidenhain describes, might, indeed, easily prove a very serious want of "adaptation of internal to external relations," whereas a tendency to dreaming would hardly prove a maladaptation at all. We have now, perhaps, sufficiently reviewed sense-illusions, both of waking life and of sleep.
It seems to me certain that woman will continue to demand her freedom, regardless of her status as wife and mother. She will continue to receive more and more general and special education, and she will continue to find the rôle of the traditional housewife more uncongenial. Out of that maladaptation and the discontent and rebellion will arise her neurosis.
Evil is accordingly accidental and unnatural; it follows upon the maladaptation of actions to natures and of natures to one another. It can be no just ground for the condemnation of any of those natural essences which only give rise to it by their imperfect realisation. The Semitic idea of creation could now receive that philosophical interpretation which it so sadly needed.
