They had nearly reached us, when we crossed the Traun and arrived at Lambach, a small city built upon a hill. We left the next day at noon, and on ascending the hill after crossing the Traun, had an opportunity of seeing the portrait on the Traunstein, of which the old landlord told us. I saw it at the first glance certainly it is a most remarkable freak of nature.
Runaways, other misfortunes, it seems, never come singly, and ere I have left Lambach an hour I am the innocent cause of yet another one; this time it is a large, powerful work-dog, who becomes excited upon meeting me along the road, and upsets things in the most lively manner.
Accordingly I wrote from Linz to Frankfort, directing a small sum to be forwarded to Munich, which city we hoped to reach in eight days. The horse circles around the market square and finally stops of his own accord without doing any damage.
There had been actions at Lambach, Amstetten, and Melk; but despite the courage and endurance acknowledged even by the enemy with which the Russians fought, the only consequence of these actions was a yet more rapid retreat.
