He succeeded in what he had set out to do, and it is now to be noted that the product he had striven so sedulously to obtain was a highly commercial one, for not only did the briquettes of concentrated ore fulfil the purpose of their creation, but in use actually tended to increase the working capacity of the furnace, as the following test, quoted from the Iron Age, October 28, 1897, will attest: "The only trial of any magnitude of the briquettes in the blast-furnace was carried through early this year at the Crane Iron Works, Catasauqua, Pennsylvania, by Leonard Peckitt.
Dry peat without a binder, or mixed with coal dust and tar or pitch is used for the same purpose. Machine peat is used for many purposes, among them making into briquettes, peat charcoal, and peat coke. It has been found practical to make illuminating gas of peat, but a far more general use is for running gas-engines and producer-gas furnaces.
The most promising uses are for fuel, as bedding for stock, as a disinfectant, in briquettes for burning lime, brick, and pottery, in which it is finding a large use, and for which it is said to be particularly well fitted; and most satisfactory of all, its use in gas-producer engines.

This fuel is not of so high evaporative efficiency as Nixon's navigation coal, but it is more suitable for torpedo boat work, because it gives out Very little dust, while the coal in closed stokeholes half smothers the firemen. Pitch is used to a large extent in the preparation of artificial asphalte, and also of a fuel known as "briquettes."
A start was made down the river at 11:15 A.M., the engines making about 180 revolutions per minute, and the boat running at some 11½ or 12 knots.
