The undersigned therefore in transmitting to M. Guizot the accompanying papers, in order that they may be made known to the French Government, begs to assure M. Guizot that he makes the communication not in consequence of any doubt which Her Majesty's Government entertain of the sincerity and good faith of the Government of France, but because it is fitting that, in a matter of such deep importance to the peace of Europe, the French Government should know how much the language which is reported to have been used by one of his diplomatic agents differs from that which the French Government itself has held.
Our ulterior purpose is to transmit the portrait to the speakers of our Congress, and to request for it place in the library of that body, as a permanent memorial of the profound respect which we entertain for your personal character and intellectual trophies, and, in particular, of the gratitude which all Americans should feel for your liberal agency in exhibiting anew to Europe the true nature of their Revolution and the distinctive preeminence of its hero.
To a commission thus constituted and thus instructed, Her Majesty's government could not only entertain no objection, but would be disposed, in common with all who sincerely desire the early and complete abolition of this detestable traffick, to look with hope and satisfaction.
