Solomon employed it both for the Temple and for his own house; the Assyrian kings cut it and carried it to Nineveh; Herod the Great used it for the vast additions that he made to Zerubbabel's temple; it was exported to Egypt and Asia Minor; the Ephesian Greeks constructed of cedar, probably of cedar from Lebanon, the roof of their famous temple of Diana.
He gave himself up to the work, which had sadly languished since Zerubbabel's time; and he began in the right way, for ere entering the Glorious Land, he halted all the companions of his pilgrimage, and fasted three days, entreating the Lord for forgiveness, and protection from their enemies.
This is the probable location of Zerubbabel's Temple, and the one enlarged and beautified by Herod, which was standing when Jesus was on earth, and continued to stand until the awful destruction of the city by the Roman army in A.D. 70. The modern visitor to this fine structure would have no thought of the ancient temple of God if he depended upon what he sees here to suggest it.
