Mr Banks also brought back many curious shells, and Mollusca; besides many species of coral, among which was that called the Tubipora musica. At six o'clock in the morning, we got under sail and stood away to the N.W., having two boats ahead to direct us; our soundings were very irregular, varying five or six fathom every cast, between ten and twenty-seven.
It is very unusual to meet with an animal belonging to the family of Lepades in tubular holes made in the coral rocks, as is the case with the Lithonaetta N. Among the twenty kinds of tabular coral here observed, there was not one of those collected at O Tahaiti; there were three new Distichoporæ, Seriatipora, six kinds of Madrepora, two Porites, four Astrea, Pocillopora cærulea, and another kind, forming broad, yellow, leafy masses, the slime of which stings like a nettle; Cariophyllæa glabrescens Cham., and Tubipora, with red animalculæ.
As the corals approach the conchylia, this interramification decreases. The tubipora forms the transition to the serpula; for the characteristic of all zoophytes, namely, the star shape of their openings, here disappears, and the tubiporæ are distinguished from the rest of the corals by this very circumstance, that the hollow calcareous pipes are placed side by side, without interbranching.
