It appears that there are two distinct tailor trades the "honourable" trade, now almost confined to the West End, and rapidly dying out there, and the "dishonourable" trade of the show-shops and slop-shops the plate-glass palaces, where gents and, alas! those who would be indignant at that name buy their cheap-and-nasty clothes.

"But let us turn to a subject more fruitful. London seemed like a great waste of dingy dwellings and badly constructed palaces, the whole sleeping under a canopy of sickly smoke. Everything wore a sombre, heavy air even the men seemed born to methodize on some one object. Show-shops, beer-shops, and gin-palaces, made the very air reek with their stifling fumes.

He would say to the numberless persons who applied, "they were not show-shops, nor he a showman." When he did grant permission he always gave the obliged parties fully and unmistakably to understand that he was conferring upon them a great favour. His temper was suspicious.

At all events, the owners of these show-shops realize a far higher profit than need be, while the buildings required for a tailoring establishment are surely not more costly than those absurd plate-glass fronts, and brass scroll-work chandeliers, and puffs, and paid poets.

What was to be done? We applied for work at several "honourable shops"; but at all we received the same answer. Their trade was decreasing the public ran daily more and more to the cheap show-shops and they themselves were forced, in order to compete with these latter, to put more and more of their work out at contract prices. Facilis descensus Averni!
