It has a pretty, clear whistle, which the Indians imitate, making it reply, and stare about in a vain search for its companions. Among the smaller birds in these forests, the trogons a genus of scansorial birds are the most beautiful, surpassing their relatives found in other parts of the world.

"One peculiarity of this bird is, that he has but one wife, and never marries again. The pairs form lasting attachments, and when one dies the mate sometimes mourns itself to death. They make a kind of nest in the hollow trees, and there bring up their young. They belong to the scansorial order of birds; that is, they have two toes forward and two backward.

There, amongst brilliant creepers and dazzling sunshine, the "parrots swing like blossoms on the trees." The foot of the parrot is formed for climbing, being, as Linnæus would say, scansorial, that is, with two toes forwards and two backwards.

From the scansorial or climbing order it takes the faculty of picking the ground, and discovering its food when hidden from the eye, while the parrot family gives it the taste for vegetable food, and furnishes it with great cunning, sagacity, and powers of imitation, even to counterfeiting the human voice.

Like them, it flings its food into the air, catching and swallowing it as it comes down. Unlike the toucans, however, it cannot climb trees, and is therefore not of the Scansorial order.
