Besides the leading princes and seigniors we find, among one hundred and thirty-four members, twelve marshals of France, eight Councillors of State, five maitres de requetes, fourteen bishops and archbishops, twenty presidents and seventeen procureurs generaux des parlements, or of royal councils, twenty-five mayors, prevots des marchands, capitouls, and equerries of large towns, the deputies of the "Etats" of Burgundy, Artois, Brittany and Languedoc, three ministers and two chief clerks.
His impetuous and impassioned eloquence is displayed in all his writings, which were collected and published under the title Recueil de Requetes et de Factums. The titles of some of his treatises will show how obnoxious they were to the ruling powers e.g., Heresie de la domination episcopale que l'on etablit en France, Protestation contre les assemblees du clerge de 1681, etc.
The grand maitre d'hotel was the chief officer of the court. The royal orders came through him; he regulated the expenses; and was, in short, to the rest of the functionaries, what the general is to the army. The maitre des requetes was at the head of civil justice; the prevot de l'hotel at the head of criminal justice....
He was rapidly promoted to the place of a maitre des requetes, a member of the lowest board of the royal council, and nine years later he became intendant of the district of Limoges. It was the poorest in France, but Turgot soon became so much interested in its welfare that he refused to exchange it for a richer one.
This was the President de Thou, a name never to be mentioned without veneration. He had been employed by his sovereign on many delicate and important commissions, and had acquitted himself in all, with ability and honour. He had filled the office of Maitre des Requétes, and been advanced to that of President a Mortiér. He was employed, at this time, upon his immortal History.
