After the completion of the great north transept for the reception of the shrine of St. Thomas Cantilupe, the terminal apses of the choir aisles were almost entirely removed, and the present north-east transept erected. In the centre of this transept rises an octagonal pier which helps to carry the quadripartite vaulting.

The aisles have seven quadripartite bays, two to each one of the nave, with columns between the three pairs of piers upon which the vaults rest. The bay before the apse has been a step higher than the rest. What the arrangement will eventually be it is difficult to say, judging from the state of the interior on the two occasions when I was in Cattaro.

In return, he was given the field of S. Theodore, and his family was exempted from communal taxes in perpetuity. The plan of the cathedral is that of a Roman basilica with nave and aisles. The three apses are semicircular, with pilasters externally. The nave has three quadripartite bays, and a half-bay to the west.

It may be that it originated from the quadripartite vaulting of the Normans, the segmental groins of which, crossing diagonally, produced to appearance the pointed arch. It may be that it was derived from that mystical figure of a pointed oval form, the vesica piscis.

It will be seen that the more ancient corals have what is called a quadripartite arrangement of the chief plates or LAMELLAE parts of the skeleton which support the organs of reproduction. But further investigations have shown in this, as in all similar grand generalisations in natural history, that there are exceptions to the rule.
